Is there anyone who doesn’t love Funfetti? We’re all-in over here, especially when it comes to my Cake Mix Funfetti Cookies. Last time we baked a batch, I started wondering what else I could do with that sprinkle-packed mix. A little internet rabbit hole later, I discovered Funfetti Dip…and yes, it’s totally a thing. I tested it a few times to make sure, and I promise you, it’s ridiculously easy.
This version has just 4 ingredients, ones you probably already have hanging out in the fridge and pantry. Best of all, it comes together in about 10 minutes. It’s a fun, no-stress dessert for after school snacks, movie night, birthday parties…basically whenever.
Pair it with my cake batter dip and brownie batter dip on a dessert table and you’re instantly the hostess with the mostess. Bonus: it tastes just like sneaking a spoonful of cake batter, and it’s loaded with sprinkles. You know it’s going to be good.

Ingredients
- Cream Cheese: I use the whipped Philadelphia cream cheese because it's a staple in our house, but you can use any cream cheese you have. Let it soften on the counter a bit before mixing it in. An easy substitute for the cream cheese is vanilla yogurt.
- Cool Whip: This is the frozen tub of whipped topping you find in the freezer section, not the whipped cream in a can. Either the brand name or the store brand will work. You’ll want to defrost the cool whip before you get started.
- Funfetti Cake Mix: Use any of the varieties of the Funfetti cake mix. The seasonal color combos are great for making this cookie dip year round. In a pinch, you can use any vanilla cake mix and add your own sprinkles.
Heat Treat the Cake Mix
The reason we are told not to eat raw batter is two fold. Typicall the mixed batter contains raw eggs, and there is a concern over bacteria in the flour.
Well, I grew up eating batter any time my mom baked and I let my kids do the same. However, there is a really easy way to make sure the cake mix is safe to eat raw. It’s the same method I use for cooking the flour in my edible cookie dough recipe.
- Spread the cake mix out on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 350℉ for 5-7 minutes.
- Alternatively you can microwave the cake mix in 30 second intervals for 2-3 minutes, stirring as you go.
In either case, your goal is to raise the temp to 165℉ degrees to kill off any of those bacteria. Be careful not to “toast” the cake mix as it can alter the flavor. Then proceed with the recipe as written.
Step by Step Directions
Heat treat your cake mix.
In a mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and cool whip together and mix until well combined and fluffy. Then add in the cake mix.
The Funfetti dip will be thick at this point. Slowly stream in the milk, mixing as you go until the mixture is to the consistency you like. You want an animal cracker to be able to dip in and scoop out without breaking. Add the milk slowly so the dip doesn't get too thin.
Add any additional sprinkles and serve. If you are going to make this recipe ahead of time, cover it with plastic wrap right on the surface and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
Sprinkles Tip
While the sprinkles in the Funfetti cake mix will likely retain their color without a problem, some other sprinkles will “run” if mixed into the Funfetti dip too soon. One suggestion is to mix in sprinkles right before serving OR just use the additional sprinkles as a garnish. You want to avoid turning your dip a muddy brown.
Dipping Options
The Funfetti Dip is reminiscent of the Dunkaroos Dip, or so I’ve been told. We weren’t a Dunkaroos family, but I love the idea of dipping into something sweet. Here are some great ideas to put out as the dippers.
- Animal crackers
- Pretzel Rods
- Apple Slices
- Pita Chips
- Graham Crackers
- Nilla Wafers
Serving Suggestions
Putting out any cake batter dip at a party is a surefire win! People love the nostalgia of it and the fun of finger foods never gets old.
Dipping Board: To make things fun (and to keep little hands out of your serving bowl), put out small bowls so that each person can take their own serving of Funfetti dip. Then arrange a large platter with the dippers so that everyone can choose what they like as they go. This prevents double dipping and gives everyone a chance to dip to their heart's content.
Storage Tips
I like to make this dip ahead of time because it keeps well in the fridge for a few hours and up to 3 days. The best container is a glass dish with a lid. I like to press a layer of plastic wrap right onto the dip to ensure freshness.
Alternatively you can portion out individual servings of the dip and keep the in the fridge at the ready. Plastic portion cups with lids are perfect for this.
If you serve the Funfetti dip in the same container you store it in, I would suggest tossing it at the end of the evening. That’s a lot of cross contamination with all the dipping going on.
