My oldest kiddo has been getting into baking, and I wanted to start her off with something foolproof that turns out great every time. This 3-ingredient blueberry dump cake was the answer!

If you've ever baked with kids, you know things can spiral out of control fast...flour explosions, sticky counters, the works. Cake mixes are the superheroes in baking with kids. Not much to measure, just one bowl, etc. Best of all, my kiddos can bake anything from pumpkin bread to lemon cookies on their own!

And this dump cake is made with just a can of blueberry pie filling, the cake mix, and butter. Best of all it's in the oven in under 10 minutes. No mixing, no mess, just dump, bake, and enjoy!

Ingredients

ingredients for a blueberry dump cake
  • Blueberry pie filling – You’ll find this near the canned fruit section at the grocery store. It’s a classic filling you’ll find at potlucks all summer long.  If you want to make your own filling, that will work too, you’ll need about 3 cups of homemade filling.
  • Cake mix – A box of yellow cake mix is my go to.  I’m partial to Duncan Hines, but use what you have in your pantry.
  • Butter – Melted so that you can pour it over all the cake mix, ensuring a golden, buttery crust every time.

Making dump cakes is more about the method than the ingredients. Have fun playing with the filling and cake mix flavors. Swap the blueberry for cherry pie filling or use a butter or white cake mix.  The combinations are endless.  Our current family fave is the pumpkin pie dump cake with my lemon dump cake a close second.

Make The Blueberry Dump Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.

Dump the blueberry pie filling into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the blueberry filling is bubbling around the edges.

Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

A Few Simple Variations

  • Add a citrus twist: A little lemon zest sprinkled over the blueberry pie filling brightens up the flavors.
  • Mix in fresh berries: If you have fresh blueberries on hand, toss a handful on top of the pie filling before adding the cake mix.
  • Try a different fruit: Swap out the blueberry pie filling for cherry, apple, or peach for a different take on this quick summer dessert.

Storage & Make-Ahead Tips

This dump cake with cake mix is best enjoyed fresh so I don't suggest making it ahead of time.

If you have leftovers (which isn’t likely), cover the pan with plastic wrap. It can sit on the counter for up to two days or be refrigerated for up to five days. Add a scoop to your blueberry overnight oats for a decadent morning treat, or just warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds before going in for leftovers!

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 can blueberry pie filling (22oz can)
  • 1 stick melted butter

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  • Dump the blueberry pie filling into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the blueberry filling, making sure to cover the entire surface.

  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the blueberry filling is bubbling around the edges. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Notes

Add fresh berries: You can always add fresh blueberries to the top of the dump cake for an extra punch.  Or try adding a variety of berries that are in season to make it a mixed berry dump cake.
Make it tall: If you want to have a taller dump cake, you can also make this in an oval casserole dish instead of the standard 9x13 baking pan.
Storage Tip: It can sit on the counter for up to two days, and then you can pop it in the fridge for up to 5 days.
