Ingredients
- Cream Cheese: I use full fat in this recipe, but feel free to use what you have on hand. The Philadelphia Cream Cheese block is perfect. Just be sure to let it softened before starting the recipe.
- Unsalted Butter: Let your butter come to room temperature. I leave butter on the counter year round, so I can bake (or slather toast) at a moments notice.
- Yellow Cake Mix: Use any brand of yellow cake mix you’d like. I’m partial to Duncan Hines, but any brand you like will work.
Heat Treat the Cake Mix
The reason we are told not to eat raw batter is two fold. The mixed batter contains raw eggs and there is a concern over bacteria in the flour.
Well, I grew up eating batter any time my mom baked and I let my kids do the same.
However, there is a really easy way to make sure the cake mix is safe to eat raw. It’s the same method I use for cooking the flour in my edible cookie dough recipe.
- Spread the cake mix out on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 350℉ for 5-7 minutes.
- Alternatively you can microwave the cake mix in 30 second intervals for 2-3 minutes, stirring as you go.
In either case, your goal is to raise the temp to 165℉ degrees to kill off any of those bacteria. Be careful not to “toast” the cake mix as it can alter the flavor. Then proceed with the recipe as written.
Step by Step Directions
Heat treat your cake mix. Then in a mixing bowl, add the butter and cream cheese then mix until well combined and fluffy.
Next, add in the cake mix and mix until the cake batter is completely combined with the butter/cream cheese mixture. The cake batter dip will be thick at this point. You can leave it thick, or add a splash of milk until you get the consistency you want.
My goal is to have a dipper dip in and scoop out without breaking. So, thick is good, and if you add milk, do it slowly so the dip doesn't get too thin.
If you want to make this recipe ahead of time, cover it with plastic wrap right on the surface and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
Dipping Options
The cake batter dip needs something to dip into it right? While, I've been known to dig in with a spoon (and so do my kids), here are some fun ideas to put out as the dippers.
- Animal crackers
- Pretzel Rods
- Apple Slices
- Whole Strawberries
- Pita Chips
Flavor Variations
- Chocolate Cake Batter: Swap the yellow cake mix for a devil's food cake mix and follow the rest of the instructions as written.
- Red Velvet: Taking inspiration from my Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookies, swap the cake mix for a Red Velvet cake mix and mix in white chocolate chips.
- Chocolate Chip: Add mini chocolate chips right into the cake batter dip as you mix it together.
- Birthday Cake: Add sprinkles to the dip, being careful not to overmix them. Some sprinkles will turn the batter colors and that’s okay. Add extra sprinkles to the top before serving.
Storage Tips
I like to make this dip ahead of time because it keeps well in the fridge for a few hours and up to 4 days. The best container for storage is a glass dish with an airtight lid. I also love these souper cubes with the silicone lids. Make sure to press a layer of plastic wrap right onto the dip to ensure freshness.
