As you know, I’m all about easy recipes and figuring out ways to keep things simple in the kitchen. And this recipe is about as easy as it gets. You may have seen it on the Tik-Tok, but I wanted to give you some more info, tips and tricks on how to make these Cinnamon Rolls with Heavy Cream perfect every time.
I love making cinnamon rolls and my kiddos love eating them even more. But as a busy mom, I don’t always have time for the rolling, filling, double rising that homemade cinnamon rolls require. And sometimes we want to be more indulgent than eating cinnamon roll overnight oats (which are delish in their own right).
Much like my cinnamon roll casserole, you’ll start with a few cans of refrigerated cinnamon roll dough. Hardest part of the whole recipe is not startling yourself while you open the cans (IYKYK). While my Hawaiian French Toast Souffle and Challah French Toast Bake are also hands off, something about a 2-ingredient recipe will always be a winner in my book.
Ingredients
- Refrigerated Cinnamon Roll Dough: I use the Trader Joes’ Cinnamon Roll Dough that is found in their dairy case or the Rhodes Frozen Cinnamon Buns found in the freezer section at your local grocery. I’ve learned from researching this recipe that the Pillsbury Grands will also work, but they aren’t kosher, so are a no go in my house.
- Heavy Cream: No substituting here. The heavy cream is the secret to fluffy, pillowy, perfect cinnamon rolls.
Step by Step Directions
Preheat the oven to 350℉. Spray your baking dish with baking spray.
*Note: You'll see both a full batch (2 cans of cinnamon rolls) and a half batch (1 can of cinnamon rolls) in the pictures. The directions are the same, just the type of pan and amount of heavy cream changes.
Then pour ½ cup of heavy cream on the bottom of pan.
Place cinnamon rolls into the pan on top of the heavy cream. Pour remaining heavy cream over the top then bake as directed on the can. About 15-18 minutes, being careful not to overbake.
Remove from the oven and let cool about 5 minutes before slathering in icing. I use the icing that comes in the can, but you can easily make your own cream cheese frosting to slather on top.
Refrigerated Cinnamon Roll Dough Vs. Frozen Dough
⭐Canned refrigerated cinnamon roll dough can be found in all grocery stores, Targets, Costco etc. I happen to always have a can or two of the Trader Joe’s brand in my fridge so that’s what we use.
The cooking and prep time are shorter when you use the canned dough and you can buy the cinnamon rolls in either jumbo/giant size (the wider tubes) or in regular size (the narrower tubes). This recipe is written using refrigerated dough.
⭐Frozen cinnamon roll dough is found in the frozen bread section in the freezers at your grocery store. They are a bit harder to find in other stores. I like Rhode's brand cinnamon rolls.
If you want to use the frozen dough, you’ll need to plan ahead to allow for thawing and rising time before they are ready to bake, but the method is the same once the dough is ready for baking.
Serving Suggestions
- Big Brunch Spread: These cinnamon rolls, served alongside a french toast bake, a zucchini quiche with iced coffees, a big bowl of fruit and pitcher of triple berry smoothies would make the perfect brunch spread for any holiday weekend, Mother’s Day brunch, friend’s summer getaway, or just because it’s Sunday.
- With Eggs: If you are looking for more balance in your breakfast, serve these cinnamon rolls with heavy cream along with a spinach and feta omelette or some avocado toast. A little sweet and savory to start the day would be great!
- For dessert: Take this recipe over the top by serving the cinnamon rolls with a big ole scoop of ice cream (think pumpkin ice cream in the fall, or french vanilla always). Top with caramel sauce and dig in!
Recipe Variations
- Add vanilla: Add 1 TB vanilla extract to the heavy cream
- With a maple twist: Add 2 TB maple syrup to the heavy cream
- Totally Decadent: Make a brown sugar butter sauce by melting ½ cup of brown sugar with one stick of butter. Pour the butter sauce over the top of the cinnamon rolls before baking.
Optional Toppings
You can make these cinnamon rolls with heavy cream even more special by adding toppings before baking them. I like to add the toppings before I pour the heavy cream over the top. Here are few suggestions, but let your imagination run wild:
- Chopped Nuts
- Raisins
- Granola
- Mini chocolate chips
- Chopped apples
Storage And Reheating Leftovers
Store the leftover (if there are any😉) cinnamon rolls with heavy cream in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
To reheat, place the cinnamon roll on a microwave safe plate and reheat at 50% power for 30-60 seconds. It should warm through, but not dry out.
