Cinnamon Sugar is like a warm hug. Growing up my mom kept a shaker full of it in the spice cabinet and brought it out to sprinkle over everything from challah French Toast , French toast casserole and even buttered noodles. Now as a mom of three kiddos, I do the same.
The best part of having this perfect ratio for my cinnamon sugar mix is that anyone in the house can mix up another batch when it’s running low. It’s just that simple. My kids can help, guests can make it, and it’s super easy to remember!
Grab your tiny whisk and your favorite jar and let’s mix up the warm hug of a spice blend together. Mine’s gonna get sprinkled on my cinnamon roll overnight oats, how about you?
Ingredients
A few notes on the ingredients:
- Cinnamon: Many people say to use the best cinnamon you can find, but I like to keep it simple and use what I have in my pantry. Typically it’s the Kirkland brand cinnamon from Costco. Any cinnamon you like will work.
- Sugar: Make sure to use granulated sugar in this recipe, not powdered sugar or sanding sugar. Brown sugar will work also, but give you a little bit of a different flavor profile.
How to make cinnamon and sugar
The right cinnamon to sugar ratio is key to perfection in this spice blend. How you mix it up is totally up to you 🙂
- Grab your cinnamon and sugar from the pantry.
- Grab a small bowl or mason jar for mixing and storing.
- Grab a fork or small whisk.
- Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl and stir/whisk together really well making sure the two ingredients are fully incorporated together.
Alternatively, you can put both ingredients in a mason jar, put the lid really well and shake until the ingredients are fully incorporated. I often choose this method because it saves cleaning up the bowl and the whisk, and my kiddos can help!
💡Hot Tip
Because this recipe is all about the right ratio of cinnamon to sugar, you can make a really small batch (1 TB cinnamon to 3 TB sugar) or a really big batch (1 cup cinnamon to 3 cups sugar). As long as you keep the ratio the same, and mix it really well, you’ll get the perfect cinnamon sugar every time!
Serving Suggestions
This spice mix can be served with lots of different kinds of recipes. Here are a few of our favorites:
Breakfasts
- French toast in our house gets dipped in cinnamon sugar. End of story 😉. Sourdough French Toast, Challah French Toast, Hawaiian Roll French Toast casserole…you get the idea.
- Buttered toast with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on the top is the ultimate comfort food for a sick kiddo.
- Stirred in hot oatmeal or matzo cereal for a sweet and warm twist on hot cereal.
- In your Crescent roll cinnamon rolls, substitute this for the brown sugar and cinnamon.
Baked Goods
- Banana Bread: I sprinkle the mix over the batter before baking for a little crunch on top.
- Snickerdoodles: Roll the cookie dough in this cinnamon sugar mix before baking.
- Passover Mandel Bread gets the cinnamon sugar treatment before it’s second bake.
Snacks
Toss any of the following crunchy snacks in butter then coat with the cinnamon sugar and bake for 8-10 minutes.
- Pecans
- Tortilla Chips
- Pita Chips
- Popcorn
- Pretzels
Storage Tips
We store our mix on the counter because it never even makes it to the spice cabinet. It will last in a jar for 3 months, but you’ll definitely use it all up before then.
