With school back in session and three busy kiddos doing all the things, sometimes you just need an easy comforting pasta dish that is super hands off. And while I love the process of layering a traditional lasagna on a Sunday afternoon, this Easy Frozen Ravioli Lasagna dish is the lazy sibling of the traditional lasagna.
You know the type of meal that you don’t have to prep for hours, but rather you can put together in less than 10 minutes with pantry ingredients. Pasta is always a win in our home, and this recipe is in hot competition with my Spinach Artichoke Pasta Bake and my Meatless Baked Ziti for favorite dinners lately.
And you want to know a little secret? You can also make this in your slow cookier and set it and forget it. Layer all the ingredients into the slow cooker, turn it on and dinner is ready when you need it!
Ingredients
- Frozen Ravioli: I like to use frozen cheese ravioli because it’s a freezer staple for us. You could also use refrigerated ravioli, but you’ll want to shorten the cooking time so it doesn't get too mushy.
- Pasta Sauce: Use your favorite jarred marinara sauce.
- Shredded Cheese: We like shredded mozzarella and you can either shred it yourself on a box grater or buy the pre-shredded kind to keep things super simple.
Ravioli Filling Options
You can now find ravioli filled with all sorts of delicious fillings in your grocery store freezer section and refrigerated pasta section. While I like to stick to a simple cheese filled ravioli to help mimic the layers in a traditional cheese lasagna, you can play with the fillings to customize your family’s ravioli lasagna.
Here a few filling flavors you may want to try:
- Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli
- 4 cheese Ravioli
- Mushroom Ravioli
- Butternut Squash Ravioli
- Italian Sausage Ravioli (if you don’t keep kosher)
How to Make Frozen Ravioli Lasagna
Preheat the oven to 400℉ and spray a 9x13 casserole dish with baking spray.
Layer about ⅓ of the marinara sauce on the bottom of your baking dish. Then place the frozen ravioli down in one layer. Cover that layer with another ⅓ of the pasta sauce, then cover the sauce with ½ the mozzarella cheese. Then repeat the process.
After the final layer of mozzarella, sprinkle the Parmesan on top of the entire lazy lasagna, cover with tin foil and bake for about 40 minutes, removing the foil for the last 10 minutes or so.
Remove from the oven, serve and enjoy!
Slow Cooker Instructions
In the winter months when everyone has all the things going on afterschool, my slow cooker is in use often. This lazy ravioli lasagna can be put together right in your crockpot and then cooked while you are running from activity to activity.
Follow the same direction as if you were baking it in a 9x13 baking dish, just do the layering in the crockpot. Then set it on low for 4-5 hours and enjoy!
Serving Suggestions
While ravioli lasagna is a meal on its own in our house, you can easily pair it with a big green salad, roasted broccoli or charred sugar snap peas.
If you want to add another carb to the dinner for the ultimate comfort meal, try pull-apart garlic bread rolls or a garlic monkey bread.
Or turn it into a side dish and serve alongside Pesto Salmon or a Lemon Garlic Butter Baked Tilapia.
Variations
- Add Veggies: Spinach is my go to vegetable for lasagna, so feel free to add a layer of spinach right on top of the frozen ravioli.
- Add Pesto: Use dollops of homemade pesto on the sauce layers for an additional layer of flavor.
- Make it Spicy: Use an Arrabiata Pasta Sauce or add crushed red pepper flakes to your marinara sauce to kick things up a bit.
- Change the Sauce: Change the sauce entirely by using an alfredo sauce and corn ravioli. Perfect take on white ravioli lasagna. Other sauce options are Vodka Sauce, Roasted Garlic Marinara or a Tomato Basil Sauce.
Make Ahead Instructions
- Freeze ravioli lasagna before baking: Assemble the entire dish and then cover tightly with plastic wrap and then a layer of aluminum foil. Put in the freezer and freeze for up to 2 months.
- Freeze after baking: Let the lazy lasagna cool and then wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil. Place it in the freezer for up to 2 months.
- Bake from frozen: Remove the plastic wrap and replace the aluminum foil. Then put in a 400℉ oven and bake for 1-1.5 hours, removing the foil after an hour. You want the ravioli lasagna to be hot in the middle and the cheese to be bubbly.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator. When you are ready to reheat, place in a microwavable bowl and heat in 30 second increments until hot throughout.
I like to add a bit of additional pasta sauce any time I reheat a pasta dish to keep it from drying out in the microwave.
