Key Ingredients

ingredients for a pumpkin smoothie
  • Pumpkin puree vs. Pumpkin Pie Mix:  Pumpkin puree is simply pumpkin that has been cooked and pureed.  Pumpkin pie mix has added ingredients like spices and sugar.  I like to use a combination of the two if possible to reduce sweetness. You can sub in roasted sweet potatoes if you don't have any pumpkin on hand.
  • Milk:  You can use any milk you like in this recipe.  To make this smoothie dairy free I like using almond or coconut milk.
  • Greek Yogurt:  Substitute any yogurt you like here.  Dairy free yogurt or vanilla yogurt work well.  We always have Fage Greek yogurt in the house, so that's what I use.

Add-in options for pumpkin pie smoothies

  • Add spinach:  Add a handful of fresh or frozen spinach. The color will change from pumpkin orange, to a muddy brown, but the taste won't really change.
  • Add cauliflower: Frozen riced or regular cauliflower adds a little bit more good stuff and creaminess to your smoothie.  I always use it in my chocolate smoothies and often throw a few florets into these pumpkin ones as well.
  • Add nut butter: Mix in a tablespoon of almond butter for an extra power boost and added creaminess.

Recipe FAQ's

Can I freeze the pumpkin puree ahead of time?

Take a can of the Libby's Pumpkin Pie Mix and combine it with a 15 oz can of pumpkin puree.  This combination gives me the right amount of sweetness and pumpkin pie flavor without having to add any additional ingredients to my smoothie.  Freeze this mixture in silicone ice cube trays or in these 2 Tablespoon Souper Cubes Trays.

Can I freeze ready made pumpkin smoothies?

Make the smoothie then pour it into glass mason jars for freezing.  I like to use these pint size jars.  Then just pop them in the freezer.  When you are ready to serve, take off the metal lid and microwave for one minute. Give it a stir and then put one of these silicone lids on and enjoy.

Make Pumpkin Pie Smoothie packs

Alternatively, make smoothie "packs" in zip top bags so all of your ingredients are in one place and you can just dump, add milk and yogurt and go.

To do this, pop a few cubes of pumpkin puree, frozen yogurt cubes, the oats and a frozen banana into a zip top bag and lay flat in the freezer.  Make a bunch of these as part of your meal prep plan and you'll have quick pumpkin smoothie ingredients ready to go whenever you need.

Equipment

  • Vitamix

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 5 frozen pumpkin puree cubes or ¼ cup pumpkin puree

Instructions

  • Add the oats, pumpkin puree and frozen bananas to the blender.  Then the Greek yogurt and milk.  Cover and start with the blender on low, and then as things start breaking down, turn it to high speed and let it run about one minute, until everything is well blended.
  • You are looking for a smooth, slightly thick consistency when you are done.
  • Then pour into cups, glasses, or jars (whatever suits your fancy) and enjoy!

Notes

Vitamix Tip: I use my Vitamix 5200 exclusively for making smoothies.  Regular blenders might work the first few times that you use them, but I they don't hold up to frequent use and don't blend the frozen ingredients in the creamy consistency as well. Be sure to use the tamper!
Freeze your pumpkin puree: I like to take a can of the Libby’s Pumpkin Pie Mix and combine it with a 15 oz can of pumpkin puree.  Freeze this mixture in silicone ice cube trays or in these 2 Tablespoon Souper Cubes Trays.

This looks delicious Marni! Can't wait to try it. One question, maybe two 😁
      1. If I only have pumpkin puree should I add pumpkin pie spices
      2. And should i add a little milk to thin it some?
Thank you for your time it takes to manage this blog and respond to questions. Appreciate you.

Yes, if you only have pumpkin puree I would add in pumpkin pie spice and either a little brown sugar or maple syrup for added sweetness. IF your smoothie is too thick for your liking, you can certainly add additional milk. Enjoy!
