Dessert for breakfast is totally a thing right? No, not yet? Well I’m going to change your mind with this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie. My kiddos say it tastes like a milkshake, but I know that there is lots of good stuff in there to get their day started off right.
As a busy mom of 3 active kiddos, I’m all about easy breakfasts that they will love. From pumpkin pie overnight oats to mixed berry smoothies or mango smoothies, I try to keep the ingredient list short, the prep minimal and the taste AMAZING!
And this smoothie is no exception. It’s got fruit and yogurt for brain food and the peanut butter and chocolate combo satisfies the sweet craving that my kids are drawn to. Hop on the smoothie train with me…I promise it’s a fun ride!
Ingredients
- Frozen Banana: I keep peeled frozen bananas stored in my freezer at all times, but you can use any ripe banana you have laying around.
- Peanut Butter: I use JIF creamy peanut butter, but you can always substitute a natural peanut butter in it’s place if that’s what you have on hand.
- Cocoa Powder: Feel free to substitute with chocolate syrup if you don’t have any cocoa powder on hand.
- Milk: Regular milk, almond milk and oat milk all work well.
Step by Step Instructions
Making a chocolate peanut butter smoothie is as simple as adding all of the ingredients to your blender container and letting it blend until thick and creamy.
Add all of the ingredients to your blender container.
Blend until thick and creamy.
💡Blending Smoothies Tip
- For a thicker smoothie: Add a cup of ice to your smoothie or make smoothie packs and keep everything frozen before blending.
- For a thinner smoothie: Add additional liquid to your smoothie. Additional milk or yogurt will do the trick!
Smoothie Variations
- Swap the nut butter: If you have a peanut allergy or just like other nut butters you can swap the peanut butter with almond butter, Chocolate SunButter or even granola butter.
- Add a veggie: Looking to get more veggies into your kiddos? Frozen riced cauliflower can be added into this smoothie easily. I add about ¼ cup to the blender container before adding in the other ingredients.
- Additional protein: You can easily add a scoop of chocolate protein powder or PB2 powder for an extra boost of protein in your smoothie.
Delicious Add-Ins
Want to take this simple chocolate peanut butter smoothie to the next level? Try adding in these pantry staples and mix things up a bit!
- Instant coffee: Makes for an all in one breakfast coffee combo. Put it all in a big old insulated cup and enjoy!
- Vanilla: A splash of vanilla makes this taste even more decadent
- Chocolate syrup: I use to drizzle it around your kiddos cup and be deemed the “coolest mom ever” at breakfast.
- Whipped cream topping: Just because!
Make Ahead Instructions
To make things even simpler, make smoothie “packs” in zip top bags so all of your ingredients are in one place and you can just dump, add milk and go.
- Start by freezing the Greek yogurt and peanut butter in silicone ice cube trays.
- Then, pop a few cubes of the frozen yogurt, the peanut butter, cocoa powder and a frozen banana into a zip top bag and lay flat in the freezer. If you don't have frozen banana's, you can use frozen banana puree or just a ripe banana in it's place.
When I’m batch making breakfasts, I’ll typically make cherry smoothie and triple berry smoothie packs, along with these chocolate peanut butter ones, so I have lots of options at the ready in the mornings or at snack time.
Freezing the Leftovers
I like to freeze our leftover chocolate peanut butter smoothies directly in mason jars. This makes it super simple to serve when we want to use it.
To freeze: Pour the leftovers directly into the jar leaving a little space at the top. Place the lid on top, tighten, but not too much and pop it into the freezer.
To defrost: Take off the metal lid and microwave for 1 minute. Give the smoothie a stir, pop on a silicone lid and enjoy. Alternatively, you can let the frozen smoothie defrost on the counter or in a lunch bag.
