We are a smoothie family.
One or more of us has a smoothie everyday, partly because we have a slight obsession with our Vitamix (see this post to understand why) but mostly because they are great healthy way to get breakfast into the kiddos on the way out the door.
(It’s not a secret that school breakfast doesn't always cut it)
Knowing that they are getting some fruits, vegetables and protein in makes me feel like I’ve had a win first thing in the morning. It's also SO EASY to do!
Smoothies in our home are also considered lunch, snacks, dessert, second breakfast, etc. Depending on what you throw in they can be super filling, satisfy the sweet craving, or give the energy boost you were looking for.
I like to make our mornings as simple as possible
I batch make smoothies on the weekend and freeze them in these 8oz mason jars. In the morning, I pop it in the microwave for 1 minute, pop this top on it, stick a straw in it and off we go.
Right now we are all into different smoothies
The kids are totally into red smoothies and green smoothies. I’m into the green one and pumpkin one. The man likes the red ones the best. I’ll share some of the other ones we keep in the rotation soon.
Top 3 smoothie recipes
Use these recipes more as a template because any fruits can be substituted based on what you have in the freezer, what's in season, and what you like.
Red Smoothie
- 1 Frozen banana
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 cup greek yogurt (we like Fage 2%, but use what you like)
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries
- ¼ cup frozen cherries
- 2 frozen vegetable cube (see this post for directions) (could use beet, carrot, sweet potato, spinach) *this is optional
- ½ cup milk (or more or less depending on how thick or thin you like it)
Put it all into a high speed blender (you know we use the Vitamix 5200) in the order listed and blend away. You’ll have to coax it all together and then let it run for a bit.
Tropical Green Smoothie
- ¼ cup almonds (I use Trader Joes 50% less salt)
- 2 frozen banana
- 1 cup frozen pineapple
- 1 cup greek yogurt
- 3 frozen spinach cubes
- ½ cup milk (or more or less depending on how thick or thin you like it)
Put it all into a high speed blender (we use the Vitamix 5200) in the order listed and blend away. You’ll have to coax it all together and then let it run for a bit
Pumpkin Smoothie
